Gordon Murray S1: A V12 Manual Tribute to the Legendary McLaren F1

Many people considered the Gordon Murray S1 the star of Monterey Car Week 2026, and it is easy to see why. Created by Gordon Murray Special Vehicles, this new hypercar is an unashamed tribute to the McLaren F1, the car its designer is rightly proud of.

Cleaner Than the S1 LM

Last year's ultra-limited S1 LM was inspired by the 1995 McLaren F1 LM and wore big wings and splitters. The new S1 takes a different path. Those aerodynamic additions are gone, replaced by a smoother, more elegant shape. Lightweight alloy wheels and lights mounted inside the front air intakes nod to the 1992 McLaren F1 show car that debuted in Monaco.

Cosworth V12 Power

Behind the driver sits a 4.2-liter V12 developed with Cosworth, producing up to 690 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque. Power goes through a six-speed manual gearbox, and the sixth ratio is longer than before to make high-speed touring more relaxed. The suspension has also been raised by 10 mm compared with the S1 LM, which makes the car more usable on real roads.

Just 64 Cars

Only 64 examples will be produced, exactly the same number as the original McLaren F1 road cars. That deliberate link to history adds enormous appeal for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Why the S1 Stands Out

In an era of hybrid systems, giant screens and paddle shifters, the S1 chooses a naturally aspirated V12, a manual gearbox and a focus on driver involvement. It is not trying to win a horsepower war. Instead, it celebrates the feeling of driving, lightness and mechanical purity. For anyone who grew up admiring the McLaren F1, the Gordon Murray S1 feels like a dream finally brought back to life.
