Rivian Limits Point-to-Point Driving to Invite-Only Testers Under NDA

Rivian is taking a cautious path to introducing its next driver assistance feature. Electrek reports that point-to-point driving will first reach owners through an invitation-only Autonomy Early Access Program, and that selected owners will have to sign a non-disclosure agreement. The programme is explained on a new Rivian support page, according to the report.

It covers U.S. R1 Gen 2 and R2 owners who pay for Autonomy+, and Rivian says point-to-point launches to that group in late 2026 and will not expand broadly until 2027. Point-to-point driving generally means that the driver enters a destination and the car handles navigation and driving tasks, with the driver remaining responsible, but I have not seen Rivian's exact description of the feature.

The use of a non-disclosure agreement is notable. It means testers will not be able to publicly share their experiences, which limits public scrutiny. Companies often use NDAs in early programmes to protect unfinished software and avoid negative publicity from bugs, but critics argue that safety-related systems benefit from transparency.

The announcement comes as other companies are setting timelines for more advanced systems, including GM for 2028 and Stellantis with Wayve. At the same time, an accident involving Tesla's Full Self-Driving this week reminds the public of the risks. Owners considering paid autonomy packages should read the terms carefully, understand what is included and recognise that features may arrive later than promised. Watch for the first reports from the early access group and for any regulatory statements. Buyers who are not invited should expect to wait, and should not pay for features that are not yet available to them.

Rivian CEO's Robotics Company Mind Robotics Names Former Ford, Apple and Tesla Executive Doug Field as President

A leadership appointment in the robotics world is drawing attention from car people. WardsAuto reports that Mind Robotics, an industrial robotics company founded by Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe in late 2025, has named Doug Field as its president. Field is a former executive at Ford, Apple and Tesla, according to the report, and the appointment was included in the 19 October industry briefing from Mac's Motor City Garage.

The move highlights how closely the car industry and robotics are connected. Vehicle factories are among the most automated workplaces in the world, and many of the skills needed to build vehicles, such as manufacturing engineering, software, batteries and supply chains, also apply to robotics. Executives who have worked at car and technology companies are in demand for that reason.

I have only seen a summary of the announcement, so I do not know the size of Mind Robotics, its products or its funding. WardsAuto's headline refers to the company as Rivian's robotics partner, which suggests a close relationship, though the exact arrangement is not clear from what I saw. Readers who want more detail should look at the company's statement and the trade report.

Why should ordinary readers care? Robotics could change how goods are made, delivered and sold, and the people leading these companies will influence how quickly that happens. For workers, automation raises questions about training and jobs. For consumers, it may affect costs and quality. The appointment is also a sign that experienced industry leaders see robotics as an important area for growth. Watch for announcements on products, customers and manufacturing plans from Mind Robotics in the coming months.
