Porsche Taycan 4 Review: Proof That EVs Don't Need 1,000 Horsepower to Be a Blast

Not every electric performance car needs enormous power, according to a test drive published by InsideEVs on 17 October. The headline says that the 2026 Porsche Taycan 4 proves that EVs do not need 1,000 horsepower to be a blast. I have only seen the headline, so I cannot report the reviewer's detailed findings on range, ride or handling.

The argument fits a broader debate. Many new electric performance cars boast very high outputs, such as the 1,153 hp claimed for the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, and horsepower figures have become a marketing contest. But more power is not always more fun, especially on public roads where speed limits and traffic prevent you from using it. Handling, steering feel, weight and responsiveness often matter as much.

Porsche's Taycan was the brand's first all-electric model and has been praised for its driving dynamics. A variant with moderate power can be lighter, cheaper and more efficient, while still being quick by normal standards. That can make it appealing for buyers who care about enjoyment and day-to-day usability more than headline numbers.

If you are considering an electric performance car, a test drive is essential. Pay attention to how the car feels at everyday speeds, the quality of the brakes, the range you can realistically achieve and charging speed on your usual routes. Compare with rivals, and consider running costs and insurance. Reviews are opinions, so read several. Watch for further independent tests and for new models from Porsche, including the Mission S concept, which hints at future directions.
