Arizona's First NEVI-Funded EV Fast Chargers Finally Open Along I-10, I-19 and I-8

Electric vehicle drivers in Arizona have new places to charge along major highways. Electrek reports that the state's first three NEVI-funded DC fast-charging stations are finally online, along Interstates 10, 19 and 8. NEVI refers to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure programme, a federal initiative to fund charging stations along highways.

The word finally in the headline reflects the slow progress of the programme in many states, where planning, permitting and procurement have delayed openings. Charging gaps on long routes are a significant concern for drivers, particularly in desert states where distances between towns can be large. Fast chargers along major corridors allow drivers to complete longer trips with more confidence.

I have only seen the headline and summary, so I do not know the locations, number of charging ports or power levels. NEVI rules typically require stations to have several fast-charging ports and to meet reliability standards, which are intended to avoid the frustrations of broken or slow chargers. Whether this site meets those standards in practice will be seen through user experience.

The opening comes at a time when U.S. EV sales have fallen since the federal purchase credit lapsed, but infrastructure remains important for future adoption. Elsewhere, an airport in Montréal has 120 chargers, and China's battery swap network has passed 2,500 stations, showing different approaches to refuelling. If you plan a long EV trip, use route-planning apps that show real-time charger availability, carry a backup plan and charge before the battery gets very low. Watch for further openings in Arizona and other states.
