Hennessey Blackbird: An Analog 850 hp V8 Supercar With a Manual Gearbox

Texas-based Hennessey is best known for the extreme Venom F5, which reaches 2,059 horsepower in Evolution specification. Its newest creation, the Blackbird, takes a completely different approach, and it may be one of the most interesting new supercars revealed this year.

Named After a Legend

The Blackbird is the third all-new model in Hennessey's history and takes its name from the legendary Lockheed SR-71 spy plane. Instead of chasing record-breaking numbers, the mid-engined machine focuses on analog engagement and the feeling of driving.

Naturally Aspirated Power

Power comes from an Ilmor-developed 6.2-liter V8 producing 850 horsepower. There is no hybrid assistance and no forced induction, which is refreshing in the modern hypercar world. A targeted weight of less than 1,360 kg should keep performance strong, with 0 to 60 mph expected in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of around 220 mph.

Old-School Cabin

The interior continues the theme. A six-speed manual gearbox sits high on the center console, complete with a machined open-gate shifter and exposed linkage. There are no media screens at all. Instead, Hennessey fits a special smartphone holder so drivers can use their phone for infotainment, keeping the cabin simple and focused.

When Can You Buy One?

Production is expected to begin in 2029, so buyers will need patience. Even so, the long lead time gives Hennessey room to refine the car and gives enthusiasts plenty to look forward to.

Final Verdict

The Blackbird shows that the future of the supercar does not have to be all batteries and screens. By celebrating a loud V8, a gated manual and a lightweight chassis, Hennessey is offering an alternative for drivers who value feel over figures. It will be fascinating to see how the finished production car turns out.
