18-Hour Blaze at a Fort Worth Cadillac Dealership Destroys Six Escalade IQ EVs and Damages Two

Texas firefighters have dealt with a major dealership fire. Autoblog reports that crews battled an intense blaze for 18 hours at Frank Kent Cadillac in Fort Worth, destroying six Cadillac Escalade IQ electric SUVs and damaging two others. The story was listed in Mac's Motor City Garage's briefing for 16 October.

The headline does not say what caused the fire, and I have not seen the fire department's findings, so it would be wrong to assume that the electric vehicles started it. Fires in dealerships can begin in many ways, including electrical faults in buildings, equipment, chargers or vehicles, and investigations can take weeks. The number of vehicles destroyed shows how severe the blaze was.

What makes fires involving electric vehicles challenging for firefighters is the nature of lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat and reignite after the visible flames are out, a process known as thermal runaway. Crews often use large amounts of water over long periods, and an 18-hour response suggests a difficult fire. Many fire departments have been developing specific training and equipment for such incidents.

For dealerships and fleet operators, the incident is a reminder to check fire protection, such as sprinklers, detection systems and separation between charging areas and stock vehicles, and to coordinate emergency plans with local firefighters. For customers, there is no need to panic, because the data on EV fires generally shows that they are not more frequent than those of petrol cars, though they can be harder to extinguish. Watch for the official cause and for any statement from General Motors or the dealership about the damage and the vehicles affected.
